Our maths curriculum follows the National Curriculum objectives for each year group. Maths at Mill Lane is taught through the use of the concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) approach, giving our students a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We use the White Rose Scheme and Mastering Number in KS1 to inform our planning, ensuring lessons build on one another in a clear, logical progression and problem solving and reasoning skills are mastered.
Each of our lessons flow through a number of core parts, and with additional fluency and consolidation and deepening activities, ensure that pupils:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of maths through varied and frequent practice with complexity increasing over time;
- Develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately;
- Reason mathematically; follow a line of enquiry and recognise relationships and generalisations;
- Develop an argument, justification and proof by using mathematical language;
- Solve problems by applying knowledge to a variety of routine and non-routine problems – breaking down problems into simpler steps and persevering in answering.
- Become equipped with the mathematical skills required to understand the uses and implications of maths, today and for the future.
Each booklet contains 10 unique fun maths games which need no special equipment or particular calculation methodology. They have one aim – children enjoying thinking mathematically at home. We hope that both the children and parents will enjoy playing these games together.
Children can choose which game to play, then they and their parents sign the book to say that they have played. In this way the teacher can see who is playing which games and how often. The activities are carefully chosen to build year on year in line with the aims of the 2014 National Curriculum.
In the front of each booklet is a grid of other maths related activities you can do together at home. These can be ticked off or coloured in once completed.
The aim is that children try to complete at least 1 maths related game or activity a week. The children will be awarded maths badges for playing games and completing maths related activities at home - Bronze (25) Silver (50) Gold (75) or even a Platinum Badge (100)
